Cyclone Zelia no threat to Queensland

Cyclone Zelia has formed off the Queensland coast and is currently a category 2 but is not expected to threaten the state.  This is good news for areas affected by the Queensland floods who are just starting to rebuild.

Cyclone Zelia has formed about 770km northeast of Cairns, but will not go near the Queensland coast

A TROPICAL low that has fiddled about off the Queensland coast for most of the week has developed into a cyclone - but will not affect the coast.

The storm is expected to intensify as it moves south-southeast away from the coast today and tomorrow.

It is one of three small cyclones surrounding Australia, although none of the notoriously fickle storms are so far threatening Queensland.

Cyclone Zelia is 770km northeast of Cairns and 445km north-northeast of Willis Is.

The Weather Bureau reports Zelia is heading southeast at 14 km/h and expected to gradually intensify over the next 24 hours.

Cyclone Vania is near eastern New Caledonia or 800km north of Norfolk Island.

Bureau forecaster Peter Otto said the New Caledonian cyclone was expected to stay well offshore, although it would start developing large swells off the southeast Queensland coast today.

``The one we've just named (Zelia) is going to develop overnight but it appears it should fairly consistently keep to the southeast,'' Mr Otto said.

``It should track parallel to the coast or a bit further away and already has gone a good distance away.

``The only influence I can see is from swell from Vania.''

Vania, a Category 2 storm, is moving south-southwest at 9km/h and is expected to continue moving southwards over the next few days.

Forecasters believe if it continues on this track, it may lie near Norfolk Island late Sunday.

Winds are expected to rise to gale force in the vicinity this morning with seas to 6m or higher.

Cyclone Vince was located 650km off Exmouth in WA and is of no consequence to Queensland.
It is expected to weaken.
